People with diabetes should:

  • See a dietitian to have a meal plan that meets their individual needs

  • Follow a regular meal pattern e.g. 3 meals a day (people on insulin may require snacks)

  • Choose from a wide variety of foods to ensure you are getting all the nutrients they need for good health

  • Choose foods that are high in fibre, such as whole grain breads, cereals, fruits and vegetables

  • Choose foods that are low in fats and sugar

  • When drinking alcohol, use only in moderation and always have with food
